senior portrait
planning

At Silhouette, every session is unique. We believe that your photos should reflect you
and your personality. Your wardrobe and props are a great place to showcase
who you are in your senior year.

When choosing an outfit, think about colors that compliment your eyes, hair and
skin tone. Medium to dark solid colors do photograph the best, but don’t feel like
you need to shy away from color. Jewel tones look amazing, especially with an outdoor session. Keep in mind that white and pale tones will wash you out and make
you lighter than your actual skin tone.

We want you to be the spotlight in your portraits; your clothing should be an accessory.
Be conservative with your patterns.

Make sure you are styled from head to toe (literally). Shoes matter and they should match the rest of your look. Don’t forget to bring “props” that represent you. Sports gear and uniforms, musical instruments, skateboards, dirt bikes, cars and pets are popular.

For a session with multiple outfits, make them count! Vary the style, colors and dress level, really make a statement with each look. If you are struggling with what to wear,
bring extra options and we will consult with you before your session.

Oh! And don’t forget to bring your additional outfits on hangers to avoid wrinkles.

Yearbook portraits are a quick and simple session
in the traditional head and shoulder style. Most schools require the same pose and background for their seniors.
If you want more variety and a senior portrait experience, we recommend upgrading to one of our senior portrait sessions. For details and pricing, please call
our studio at: 520.886.1710.

For the yearbook photograph, we encourage you to dress up. Fashion is a statement, so say something important. Most guys wear a dress shirt and tie or bow-tie.
Girls, a nice dress or blouse works great, just make sure
to wear a top with some sleeve or higher neckline.
Because of how close these photos are cropped, it’s best
to avoid sleeveless tops or low cut shirts (or do one, but not both). Since yearbook photographs are a headshot,
you do not need to worry about pants or shoes.

Because our studio space is limited and yearbook portrait season is incredibly busy, we ask that you please limit the number of people who accompany you to your portrait session to no more than 2 people per client.
Thank you in advanced

When selecting an outfit, pick clothing that accentuates your best features. Do you have blue eyes? Wear a color that makes them POP!
Opt for pieces that aren’t too revealing. You can show a bit of skin without exposing too much; find pieces that balance your look from head to toe. Don't forget to add some style with accessories like jewelry, hats, scarves and jackets.

For makeup, apply it slightly heavier than normal. Concealer, mascara, blush, and lip color will take your portraits to the next level. If you don’t typically wear makeup and need some help, we can refer you to our favorite artists and salons. Hands and feet will show so make sure to have a fresh mani/pedi. Please have your hair and
make-up completed when you arrive.

This is the time to show off your style. Make mom proud! Dress your best in a suit, polo or collared shirt and tie. Add more style with jackets, hats, sunglasses, boots and flashy sneakers. If dressing up really isn’t your thing, any shirt with a collar can elevate your look, while still giving you comfort.

A fresh shave is important. Remember--if you can see stubble in the mirror, it will most definitely show in your portraits. We recommend getting your haircut a week prior to your appointment. Do not forget to style your hair with a bit of gel, wax or spray.

PLANNING

Personally, nothing is more important to us than family, which is why photographing families is one of our favorite subjects to shoot. No two families are the same and we love seeing the different dynamics and personalities with each one. For many, having professional family portraits taken is not something that happens every day…or year.
For this reason, we want to treat your session as a special event.

For your session, please make sure you allow yourself the time to plan either before or after scheduling your
appointment with us. First, find a date and time that works best for each member of your family. Next, think about where you would like your session to take place. Our studio offers both indoor & outdoor options. We have the
largest outdoor studio facility in Tucson, offering our clients 10-acres of natural backdrops for their portrait session.
Although we believe our studio has it all, we also understand some families’ desire to have a different location.
That is why we also offer on-location sittings.

At Silhouette Photography, when we photograph a family session our end goal is your wall. We offer some digital options. However, we are artists as much as we are photographers and take pride in producing quality prints that are
the best reflection of our work. Before your session, some important questions to think about are: where do you plan to
put or hang the portraits in your home, what size photograph will look best there, what colors are in that room and
to what friends and family do you plan to give photographs to?

what to wear

CONTINUED

Now that you have scheduled your appointment with us, next is deciding what to wear. When planning for your family portraits coordination is so important. Personally, we think jewel tones and darker solid colors look the best on all skin tones and shapes.
We recommend avoiding white or light colors. The lighter colors have a tendency to wash out even darker skin tones.
It also draws attention away from your face.

Many families choose to dress the same from head-to-toe. A black shirt and blue jeans is a classic go-to because most people have these items already in their closet; it’s easy. This clothing choice also allows you to be the main focus in your portraits, not your outfits. When looking at the finished photograph, your eye will more easily go to everyone’s face rather than your clothing.

Another option for clothing that is modern and popular is to color coordinate with your family. This can be trickier, but when pulled off well it looks stunning. With this look, select a color palette consisting of 2-3 colors and carry them throughout everyone’s outfits and accessories to add interest. It is important not to go too overboard with colors and patterns. We recommend selecting one neutral tone and accessorizing it with 1-2 more colors; pattern should also be limited to only a few pieces of clothing. For example, choose gray as your neutral tone and add pops of burgundy and navy. Your son could wear a burgundy and navy plaid shirt, a burgundy dress for your daughter, a gray shirt for dad with blue jeans and a navy dress with burgundy accessories for you.
If you are still having a difficult time with this, we have helpful ideas on our Pinterest page.

Remember, layers and accessories add texture and dimension to the portraits helping to add richness and detail. It is incredibly warm in southern Arizona so consider necklaces, earrings, ties, vests and hats, as well as seasonal scarves, cardigans and sweaters.

Investing in a professional business portrait is an excellent way of connecting with current and potential clients. Having a professional head-shot taken that presents the best “you” will speak volumes about your business and you. We offer individual head-shots, corporate group photography and lifestyle/branding portraits. Lifestyle and branding sessions give a behind-the-scenes look at you doing what you do in the office and interacting with your staff and clients.

Individual business portraits are generally a head and shoulder image. Silhouette Photography offers both indoor and outdoor portrait options.
Our studio is located in Trail Dust Town, offering our clients the largest outdoor studio in Tucson. We are also available for on-location portrait sessions,
if you would like to be photographed at your office or a specific location.

What you wear for your business portrait is very important. When deciding what to wear, first dress in a fashion that best represents you and your company.
If formal attire more accurately reflects your line of work, we recommend dressing as if you were meeting with an important client.  Jewel tone and darker solid colors photograph the best. If you wear a white dress shirt, wear a suit jacket or blazer that is dark in tone over it. Pressed and fitted clothing gives you a look of sophistication and class. For a more casual business portrait, you still want to wear something that looks thought through and presents the best you.
For men, we recommend a collared shirt, polo or sweater over a button-down shirt. For women, a nice blouse, button-down shirt or dress look great.

Gentlemen—we recommend a hair cut a week prior to your appointment and make sure to have a fresh shave. Ladies— three-quarter length to long sleeves
are most flattering. Adding jewelry builds interest and dimension to your portrait. Since this is typically a head and shoulder photograph, earrings and a statement necklace will show the most. Makeup should be applied slightly heavier than usual. If you do not typically wear makeup, make sure to at least
use foundation, mascara, blush and lip color.  If you need additional help, we can refer you to one of our favorite  salons.
